The Church of Santa María - The Altar of Santa Teresa
The altar dominates the nave of the
Epistle. The figure of Santa Teresa wears a biretta, as befits the patron of the clergy of Santa
María, a title bestowed by the Ecclesiastical Council in the 18th century. This figure was a gift
from the seventh Duke of Arcos, Joaquín Ponce de León y Lancaster. It is a Napoitan statue, gilded,
decorated an finely coloured.
The Baroque altar has two sections, each with its own niche, containing
in the lower the figure of Santa Teresa and in the upper a half relief of Santa Catelina de Siena,
to whom the altar was formerly dedicated.
