Church of San Pedro - The Exterior
A flight of steps leads up to the
church which stands in an elevated position some two metres above the street. The sides of the
church are Baroque in style and are of minor interest in comparison with the main façade which
comprises three principal features: the doorway, the balcony and the bell tower. This façade was
designed by Manuel Gómez and Pedro de Silva in Baroque style with noticeable overtones of the
Sevillian school of architecture and was built in the 18th century.
The doorway is flanked by two pairs of grooved columns, each pair
framing two alcoves containing figures. This is crowned by a frieze and cornice.
In the second part of the façade, one’s attention is drawn to a
rectangular alcove gramed in twisted pillars, containing a figure of San Pedro. Over this rises a
curved pediment and tympanum holding a window with balcony.
The belfry is square with Ionic pillars, and the three bells are lodged
within three Roman arches. Within the topmost pediment rises a double arched belfry.
