La Caridad Convent
Built in the latter half of
the 18th century, this convent has a colonial style and is perhaps one of the pleasanter surprises
that Arcos has to offer.
The doorway to the octagonal church is made up of three rounded arches,
supported by pillars and spanning a wrought iron gate. Twin belfries stand before the cupola. The
inside of the church is oval and elegantly proportioned. One’s attention is drawn to some
interesting Italian figures, and particularly to the “Virgen de la Caridad” which adorns the main
altarpiece in a chapel decorated with coloured glass and mirrors.
The church is flanked on both sides by large, square courtyards, whose
decorated walls finish in undulating lines. The doorways to the courtyards are still intact, topped
by triangular pediments, although the lefthand one is incomplete.
