Las Nieves Junior School
Founded in 1675. It had previously
been a private house, and was donated by its owner, Diego de Virués, to the Jesuit fathers of
Mercy. With the expulsion of the Jesuits, the Mercedarian order of monks received a special
concesion from the king in 1785 to occupy the building. This situation came to an end with
Mendizábal’s policy of appropriation of church property.
The simple classical façade presents a stark appearance. The lintel
bears the Spanish coat of arms and the Bourbon fleur-de-lis. Inside, there are two fine panelled
ceilings above the stairway and on the upper floor. At present the building is used as a state
junior school.
