The Castle
The castle takes the form of
a quadrangle, with battlements and four towers, one at each corner. In the Arab period it was a
military fortress; however, the present castle is the result of rebuilding work in the 14th and
15th centuries. According to documents, there survive from the original fortress a large horseshoe
arch at the west entrance and a wall in the southwest entrance and a wall in the southwest. The
Tower of the Secret, the Eastern Battlements, the towers of the south side, the large water-tank in
the Patio de Armas and the crenellations of the Pyramidal Roof date from the 14th and 15th
centuries.
Present access to the castle is through the arch where the oratory of
the Town Hall originally was. Crowning the doorway is the crest of the Dukes of Arcos. The castle
is privately owned.
